Ice climbing

Climbing frozen waterfalls.. for beginners !

Ice climbing

Description

Ice climbing, is a discipline part of mountaineering. The principle consists of climbing and ascending a mountain stream which has solidified and frozen with the freezing winter temperatures. To do this, we use ice axes and crampons with spikes in order to climb up along glacial formations. Practice areas are diverse, they can be corridors or ice gully in high mountains or frozen waterfalls in winter in medium mountains.

The Giffre Valley is one of France’s most renowned sites for quality ice falls and those who enjoy rock climbing will undoubtedly be interested in trying out this challenging climbing experience.  With the guidance one of our English speaking professionals, you’ll discover special techniques and equipment required to climb a frozen waterfall.

The initiation to ice climbing seems an impressive discipline which shoud be only reserved for mountaineers or seasoned climbers. However it might surprise you but no experience is necessary to try the adventure! Our High Mountain Guides will take you to mountain waterfalls suitable for beginners, no climbing experience is necessary. Practice areas for beginners generally have a 45 ° slope angle, ideal for getting started in complete safety!

Ideal for

Everybody ! Ice climbing is not just for rock climbers. Any adventurer looking for new sensations and extraordinary scenery can set off on an icefall, if accompanied by one of our High Mountain Guides.

It is quite possible to start without any experience in climbing or any other mountain sport. You just need to be motivated!

Anybody looking for an exhilirating and physically challenging winter sport, unlike any other.  Keen rock climbers will enjoy the new challenge of using ice axes and crampons in places of their fingers and toes!  “Wild” frozen waterfalls offer a truly beautiful and unique environment that you’ll enjoy experiencing up close and personal with the help of a ZigZag high mountain guide.

Hours-location

The place of practice is not fixed, our High Mountain Guides study the ice conditions of the various places of practice in the region on a daily basis, in order to be able to offer you a place of activity adapted to your level, while respecting maximum safety standards. . You have to take into account the  ice conditions, weather and snow conditions in the nearby area.

An entirely different winter activity accessible to all ages and levels of ability (no experience required). Conditions must be right for waterfalls to freeze in a solid and ‘safe’ manner, so ice climbing is generally only possible between December and February, during very cold periods.

This is a full day activity.

Pricing

For a whole day accompanied by one of our High Mountain Guides, the price is as follows:

1-4 people: 360 €

+ 50 € per additional person

Equipment

Your ice climbing guide will provide crampons, ice axes, helmet, harness, ropes and ice screws.  You’ll need to hire cramponable mountaineering boots (available at Twinner in Samoëns’ centre), and to wear warm, flexible, waterproof clothing.   You will need to wear warm gloves and to bring a picnic lunch.
