Ski Touring | Samoens Grand Massif
Description
Ski touring or ‘skinning’ is a challenging sport in which you first ascend a mountain slope on skis before skiing down it. Ski touring opens up a wide range of route choices and participants can explore terrain both within and beyond the marked ski area.
The basic principle of ski touring involves adding ‘skins’ to the underside of your skis that allow you to walk up a snowy slope without sliding backwards. With skins attached, you simply walk uphill, much as you might hike up a mountain during the summer months. Upon reaching a summit, you simply remove the skins from your skis and enjoy a pristine downhill descent.
Snowboarders can also enjoy touring, which is called ‘splitboarding’. A splitboard consists of two touring skis that can be connected together at the summit to transform into a snowboard.
Ski touring offers total freedom, allowing you to climb any mountain before enjoying a well-earned descent.
Ideal for
Ski touring is open to skiers from early intermediate to expert level. To begin ski touring, participants must be capable of skiing down a groomed blue piste in order to start ski touring, but an expert level of ski ability is not required to start out.
The itinerary you choose will be adapted to suit your level of ability and fitness. While expert level skiers are attracted to ski touring for the off-piste terrain and fresh tracks it allows them to access, intermediate level skiers might prefer to ‘skin’ up the mountain and ski back down on groomed alpine pistes.
Ski Touring is generally practised in a ‘private lesson’ setting, with an itinerary selected especially by your Instructor or Guide to suit your specific goals and ability. The professional who guides your party aims to help you achieve your objectives and to get the very best from the experience, while ensuring your safety and wellbeing.
Organisation
Ski touring can be practised throughout any alpine region, with a vast choice of route options available within and beyond marked ski boundaries.
The routes we organise are generally in and around the Grand Massif and the Upper Giffre Valley (Morillon, Samoens, Sixt Fer-à-Cheval, Boston, Les Carroz, Flaine, etc). Our Instructors and Guides enjoy ski touring in their own free time and know the region by heart, including routes in surrounding areas such as Praz de Lys, Sommand, Morzine, Les Gets, Avoriaz, Le Reposoir, etc.
The selection of your ski touring route is a decision made by you and your Guide. Your Guide will call you the evening prior to your outing to discuss suitable options in light of your level of ski ability and experience, along with the weather and snow conditions and any specific goals you might have. A meeting time and place will be agreed according to the route you choose together.
