Morillon Visitor's GuideWelcome to Morillon, the Grand Massif Altitude 700 to 1900 m Season open 17/12/2011 to 15/04/2012
Morillon is the ideal family ski destination. A charming ski resort nestled in the pine forests of France’s Grand Massif, Morillon (pronounced Morry-on) is the ideal location for hassle-free family skiing.
Less than an hour’s easy drive from Geneva airport, the resort’s convenient location means no queuing for hours in changeover day traffic.
The village of Morillon sits on the valley floor at 700m and is linked by a gondola to Morillon 1100m (Les Esserts) where skiing begins. Home of Olympic racing champion and local hero Antoine Déneriaz, Morillon has been a popular local ski resort for more than 60 years, yet has only recently become known to international visitors. No major tour operators yet work in the area, saving its charming atmosphere for more selective holidaymakers.
Accommodation in Morillon village and Morillon 1100 With ski-in/ski-out accommodation available right on the slopes at 1100m, or more luxurious hotel and chalet accommodation available nearer the valley floor (760 m), Morillon offers simple access to the beginners’ slopes. While a few restaurants and bars are available to guests staying on the slopes at 1100m, the resort is very family orientated and is not renowned for its après-ski atmosphere. Those with a car will appreciate being able to get off the mountain for a meal or drink in nearby Samoëns once or twice or to go shopping supermarket . Vehicles can easily be hired from Geneva airport and will provide you with a great deal more flexibility throughout your stay.
Skiing in Morillon – ideal for intermediates 70 snow cannons between 1500m and 1100m keep the conditions good in Morillon. If the snow is particularly good it’s possible to ski right down to the village, but normally the skiing starts at Morillon 1100m, an 8 minute gondola ride up from the valley floor. There, a button lift next to the beginners’ area allows first time skiers and snowboarders to practise their skills before moving to the marvellous (and aptly named) green slope Marvel.
The highlight of the Grand Massif, the Marvel piste is generous in width and length and offers spectacular views as it winds gently through the forests. Suitable for the whole family to enjoy, we recommend taking both the Les Esserts and Bergin chairlifts so as to avoid the narrow top section your first few times. For a traditional lunch, try stopping off at l’Igloo restaurant.
